Maria Cigolini is a palliative medicine physician
with a background in general medicine and an
Associate Professor of Medicine at the University
of Sydney (UniSyd), Australia. She has coauthored and created a wide range of policies,
programs, and consensus guidelines in supportive and palliative
care. From 2010 to 2022 she was Clinical Director of the Palliative
Care Department at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) in Sydney,
responsible for the clinical expansion of the department to its current
size, along with the management and administration, research and
quality assurance projects within the department, and its associated
community and regional outreach services.
During her time as clinical head, she achieved training accreditation
of all current Royal Australasian College of Physician Palliative
Medicine Advance Training positions within the RPAH consultative and
community services and regional outreach, and for the Sydney Local
Health District’s dual-training Renal Supportive Care Service position,
for a service she co-designed.

Dr Joanna Howe is a Professor of Law at the
University of Adelaide and a consultant with Harmers Workplace
Lawyers. She holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Law from the
University of Oxford where she studied as a Rhodes Scholar. In 2019
Joanna was appointed as the Australian representative to an ILO
working group on temporary labour migration. Joanna has published
and consulted widely in migration and workplace law making
significant contributions.
In 2022 Joanna was appointed by the Minister for Home Affairs as part
of an expert, three-member panel to review the Australian Migration
Program. She is the recipient of the SA InDaily 40 under 40 Award and
the University of Adelaide’s Women’s Research Excellence Award.

Fr Paschal is a priest of the Order of Friars Minor
Conventual. He is assistant priest of the Parish
of St. Joseph’s, Springvale, in the Archdiocese of
Melbourne. He holds undergraduate degrees in
Medicine (Monash) and Theology (Catholic Theological College),
has a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical John Paul
II Institute in Rome, and a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the
same Institute. His areas of research are in moral theology and
bioethics. He is currently a member of staff at the Catholic Theological
College, Melbourne.

Conscientious Objection in Medicine
Xavier is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow
at the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard’s Institute for
Quantitative Social Science. Xavier’s research interests include
ethical issues at the beginning and end of life, conscientious
objection, ethical issues in aged care, and pandemic ethics.
His recent PhD thesis focused on the allocation of lifesaving
healthcare resources. Xavier has taught bioethics for several years,
and has worked with the Catholic healthcare sector on several
projects related to ethics education. In 2020, Xavier was awarded a
Fulbright Future Postdoctoral Scholarship, and he was a scholar in
residence at Georgetown University’s Kennedy Institute of Ethics
from September 2021 to March 22

Deacon Michael is a retired GP with significant
involvement in community Palliative Care. He
retired from clinical practice 7 years ago to
make the transition into the permanent diaconate in the Parramatta
Diocese. He is a convert, being baptized at the age of 19 when he
arrived in Australia. He has a life-long interest in the formation of
Catholic Healthcare professionals.
Elisabeth Taylor is an independent researcher,
writer and speaker. She graduated with first
class honours in History from Sydney University
and won a Commonwealth scholarship to
Cambridge, where she completed a PhD in
medieval women’s history. For the last six years, her research interests have
centred on the modern political debates concerning gender and sexuality.
She has published and lectured the history of sexual rights activism, queer
theory, the transgender movement, feminism, comprehensive sexuality
education, pornography, and the Safe Schools program. Her work focusses
particularly on the personal, commercial, and political agendas impelling
the progress of the sexual revolution and highlights the dangers these
pose to children, the family and democracy more broadly. Elisabeth is now
teaching Medieval History at Campion College Sydney.
Bishop Richard Umbers, Archdiocese of Sydney.
Bishop Richard entered the Opus Dei Seminary
of Cavabianca, in 1996 achieving a Bachelor of
Theology in 1999. Between 1999-2002, he received
a Doctorate in Philosophy. In November 2018 he
took up his position on the Australian Catholic
Bishops Conference’s Bishops Commission for Life, Family and Public
Engagement. He is also the Episcopal Vicar for the South Eastern Region,
the Episcopal Vicar for Evangelisation and the Liaison Bishop for Tertiary
Education. Bishop Richard is widely published in the area of philosophy,
regularly addresses youth gatherings, has a strong interest in social
media and has a library of his own podcasts. He is proficient in Spanish,
Italian and Latin.
Shawn is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with a background in counselling and psychotherapy. His journey includes years of formation and missionary work with the Missionaries of God’s Love, following this he settled in Canberra raising four children with his wife Branka, and completed studies in theology, social work, and family therapy. Shawn contributed to establishing men's counselling services and co-founded the OzHelp Foundation, a national suicide prevention organisation. He served as the Executive Director of Pastoral Support for the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, focusing on various pastoral care and evangelization initiatives. Shawn has also held roles as CEO of the Conflict Resolution Service Inc, National Manager of Integrated Onsite Counselling with Converge International and Manager of Student Counselling for a Catholic Education system of 56 schools. Currently, he is a Master Mentor and International Programs Consultant with the CatholicPsych Institute which was founded in 2012 in New York by Dr Greg Bottaro

Anna Walsh is a lawyer specializing in Medical Law
and Bioethics. A former Accredited Specialist in
Personal Injury law, she spent 10 years as a Partner
at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, where she acted
in a number of novel medical negligence cases
and high profile inquests in the Coroner’s Court. She has published
widely in Medical Law and is a regular speaker at conferences. In
2011, she was named the Lawyer of the Year in Private Practice by
the NSW Women Lawyers’ Association, and in 2021 she was the
recipient of the Catholic Medical Association’s Mary Glowrie award
for her contribution to medical ethics.
